Frequently asked

How does SnackScore know what's in a product?

It identifies the product from your photo, barcode or typed name, then looks up ingredients and nutrition in Open Food Facts. If the product isn't in that database, it researches it on the live web and shows you the sources. If exact source data still cannot be found but the photo identity is clear, it may return a low-confidence result labelled "Estimated from photo". It does not invent nutrition numbers - anything it can't verify is left blank.

What does the 1-100 score mean?

It rates overall food quality - nutrition (sugar, salt, saturated fat, fibre, protein), ingredient quality and processing level. Bands: 90-100 Excellent, 75-89 Good, 60-74 Okay, 40-59 Weak, 20-39 Poor, 0-19 Avoid. You can also score a product against a personal goal like low sugar or high protein.

It scored the wrong product / picked the wrong item.

For the most exact match, scan the barcode or type the full product name including the brand. A clear, well-lit photo of the front of pack also helps. If it still looks wrong, email us the product and we'll look into it.

Why does it say "Found on the web"?

That product wasn't in the Open Food Facts database, so SnackScore looked it up on the live web instead and is showing you the sources it used. The nutrition is real data from those pages, not a photo-only estimate.

Why does it say "Estimated from photo"?

That means SnackScore could identify the visible product, but could not find exact source-backed ingredient or nutrition data. Treat it as a rough guide and check the physical label for the authoritative facts.

Is my data private?

Yes. No accounts, no ads, no third-party tracking. Your scan history stays on your device, and scanned photos are not stored in SnackScore's databases or shared with other users. An anonymous product result - including its product name - may be cached temporarily so later scans are faster; it is not stored as a personal scan history. Read the full privacy policy.

Is this medical or dietary advice?

No. SnackScore explains food quality, not your health. It's guidance, not a diagnosis. For allergies or medical conditions, always check the real packaging and a qualified professional.

Is it free?

Yes, with a free monthly allowance: the free plan includes 10 barcode scans per calendar month. Photo scans and typed search ("smart" scans) are part of the paid plans. SnackScore Pro - an auto-renewing subscription handled through the App Store - includes 500 barcode scans and 100 smart scans per month. SnackScore Pro Max includes unlimited barcode scans (with a fair-use safeguard) and 250 smart scans per month. Allowances reset at the start of each calendar month.
